Vic Hurt tells North Dakota Gov. Ed
Schafer and first lady Nancy Schafer his
dike is holding up on Forest River Road
south of Fargo. Hurt says the dike was
constructed to accommodate the original
forecast, and when that was erroneously
revised upward it was necessary to cut an
opening through his deck and build on to the
dike through it.

Firefighters work on top of a submerged vehicle in the ice-covered
waters of a ditch west of Mapleton, N.D., on Interstate 94 Friday
in a futile attempt to rescue the occupant trapped in the car. The
driver,a 77-year-old Casselton man whose identity was unavailable,
was pronounced dead at the scene.
