Fargo needs volunteers to help tear down sandbag dikes

Good evening everyone... The sandbag dikes in the city of Fargo Kept flood waters away from many homes...

But now they must go.. The city needs volunteers to help tear down the thousands of residential dikes throughout the city. But as John Foster reports, unless more people pitch in, residents may be stuck holding the bag.

Mary Kenna is the program director for the flood volunteer center. She planned to have teams of volunteers tearing down residential dikes today. But she couldn't find enough people. Mary hopes that changes soon.

Mary Kenna/Flood Volunteer Center:
It's a lot different now, we're not in the crisis mode, but we're still in the mode of needing a lot of volunteers.

Volunteer center workers are trying to find help, but the phones have been sitting on the hook, just like most of the sandbags.

Mary Kenna/Flood Volunteer Center:
We're really encouraging businesses or church groups, youth groups to adopt a neighborhood or a block to help all of those homeowners in that area to take the dikes down.

That's what meadow creek residents have done. Neighbors like Darrel Hestdalen have worked together, and many of the sandbags are out on the curb, ready to be hauled away.

Darrel Hestdalen/Fargo:
I've been able to work out here during the day and my wife has helped me over the last couple of days, last night, my wife was able to help the neighbors while I had to do some things, tonight we're gonna chip together to get our neighbors dike down, it's working really well.

John Foster/News Center 6:
