More details emerge on large donation
to flood victims
(WDAY News Script)
More details tonight about the two-thousand dollar checks being
handed out to greater Grand Forks residents affected by the
flood...
Najla/News Center 6:
The only qualification to recieve the money is that you are the
head of a household in a mandatory evacuation area with immediate
needs. Their are about 20-thousand households in Grand Forks and
3-thousand-five-hundred households in East Grand Forks. But city
officials say not all of those homes should apply for the money.
Laura Gallegos has more.
Mayor Pat Owens/Grand Forks:
We tried to set up an honor system that will be fair for those
that had to be evacuated and are in the most need at this point
for instance I look down at the Lincoln Drive area and see houses
floating and there is no doubt in my mind that they are in need
and they are hurting.
Laura Gallegos ..news Center 8:
The hardest hit areas of town will recieve priority when it comes
to check distribution. Tomorrow between the hours of one and four
residents in the Lincoln Park, Central, and Riverside areas of
Grand Forks can fill out applications at Century school.
Mayor Lynn Stauss/East Grand Forks:
This puts a test on both our communites. You know if you are in
need. We're are not to judge.
Laura Gallegos ..news Center 8:
East Grand Forks residents living in ward one and two can pick up
their checks here tomorrow at Senior High between noon and 3 pm.
Ward three starts Friday.. Dates for other areas to start picking
up checks will be announced.
Howard Swanson/City Attorney:
This donor intended the money to go to immediate needs she did
not intend it to go towards repairs or reconstruction of homes.
Laura Gallegos ..news Center 8:
Swanson adds that the fund is designed to fill in the gaps where
other relief programs can not. It's not meant to replace those
programs. You can call 1-800-605-5252 for an application or write
to "immediate needs fund" 1405 1st ave. N., Grand
