Opinion roundup: New report sounds a warning

10/11/2008
So much carbon was released around the world from burning fossil fuels in 2007 that it could lead to a sweltering 11-degree-Fahrenheit increase in the Earth’s temperature by the end of the century, according to data recently unveiled by the Global Carbon Project.

ND community banks are prepared to serve

10/11/2008
The current financial crisis that grips our nation draws a distinction between Wall Street banks and the Main Street banks in your North Dakota community.

Measure 4 important for reforming WSI

10/11/2008
The most recent audit of the runaway train that is North Dakota’s Workforce Safety and Insurance confirmed what everybody knew all along – that the top brass at WSI told staff to look for past injuries and so-called “pre-existing conditions” to avoid paying otherwise valid claims.

Campaign songs for John McCain

10/11/2008
A friend and I were discussing the idea of campaign songs the other day. It occurred to me that John McCain should not just have a campaign song, but a campaign band. That band should be “The Who.”

What happened to food vs. fuel debate?

10/11/2008
I have not heard a lot of discussion regarding the food vs. fuel debate lately. Perhaps that is because the price of corn is half what it was just three months ago. By the way, has the cost of your groceries dropped in half also? Of course not. This obvious answer to the question disproves the fallacy that the ethanol industry is to blame for the rising price of food.

Measure 1 helps us save for the future

10/11/2008
Measure 1 on the Nov. 4 ballot is very simple: save money or spend it. That’s the decision voters will make.

Pomeroy, Conrad on right side of vote

10/11/2008
On behalf of the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead, we want to thank Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Congressman Earl Pomeroy, D-N.D., for their recent votes on the bipartisan legislation to rescue the U.S. financial system.

Going into ANWR is just not worth it

10/11/2008
In response to Steve Strege’s letter Oct. 6 (“Extremists block the search for oil”), I’d like to clarify, again, the myth of “2,000 acres” – a newspaper sheet on a football field – when talking about impacts from drilling in our national treasure – the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Great event, but no Forum coverage

10/11/2008
Thanks for another great fund raiser, but again, no coverage by The Forum. There were many motorcycles gathered Oct. 4 to support our community’s biggest cancer drive.

Not much of a sacrifice for minister

David Danbom
Last Sunday, the Rev. Gus Booth, pastor of the Warroad (Minn.) Community Church, opined from his pulpit that “Democrats are ignorant in their Christianity,” and that his congregation should vote for the “most righteous” candidate, John McCain (Forum, Sept. 29).

Small-town values? Think again …

Jack Zaleski
Conceded: Sarah Palin and Joe Biden performed quite well in Thursday’s vice presidential debate in St. Louis. Gov. Palin did not self- destruct or look like a moose in the headlights, as she did a few days before in an interview with Katie Couric of CBS News.

Coming from a large family and marrying a woman also from a large family, I have a broad network of relatives. By blood and marriage I’m an uncle more than 40 times over, with nephews, nieces and cousins galore of various generations. One of these relatives, an Iraq war veteran, died this past summer.
