Vanity Fair’s Miley photos conjure up images of Lolita

none - 05/04/2008
Who comes off as most offensive in the unfortunate photo spread of 15-year-old Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana in Vanity Fair: Her parents? The photographer? The magazine itself? Call it a hat trick of bad taste or a trifecta of dysfunction, there’s plenty of blame to go around.

Blissful Calgon days are long gone

The Forum - 04/22/2008
As a child of the ’70s, I was a marketer’s dream. You could find me listening to my Shaun Cassidy record while popping Pop Rocks into my Lip Smackered lips with the smell of Clairol Herbal Essence in my hair competing against the Love’s Baby Soft on my skin.

Divorce doesn’t break bond with mother-in-law

The Forum - 04/29/2008
Earlier this month, my sons’ maternal grandmother died after an eight-year battle with cancer. Despite the fact that my ex-wife and I split nearly three years ago, her family still has embraced me and kept me in the fold.

Words play role in how we act, care for others

none - 05/04/2008
Dear Carol: I read your article on adult day care. You suggested that people call it something else, like “the club,” as “day care” is thought of as something for children. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but does what you call the care service really matter to someone with Alzheimer’s?

Scone recipe a sample of book’s local flavors
It was love at first flip. On a recent Saturday morning I curled up in an overstuffed chair and watched as big flakes of snow gradually formed a thick featherbed over the perennials in my garden.

Give tzatziki a try

The Forum - 04/30/2008
To my ear the names of Greek dishes seem musical – souvlakia (marinated lamb chunks), keftehes (meatballs), kabobs (skewered meat, chicken or fish), gyros (pita bread sandwiches), dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) and that exquisite but simple sauce, tzatziki (dzah-DZEE-kee).
